Our Service Engineer Gareth Bamber has just signed up for next year’s ‘Steve Prescott St Helen’s 10k run’. Gareth will run in memory of his Nan, Joan Bamber, who passed away last summer after a 12 year battle with dementia. He will be running with his dad, 52 year old Ian Bamber and all money raised through sponsorship will go to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Gareth has never undertaken to run a distance like this before and has already started his training:
“Running such a distance is a big deal for me as it’s something I’ve never done before. It’s worth it though as watching my Nan living with dementia was heart breaking and the effect it had on her as a person not to mention the impact it had on my family was devastating. Me and my dad are proud to be able to support the Alzheimer’s Society and hope that our fundraising will go a small way to supporting their work so more people can receive care and research can be funded to find new ways of treating this awful condition.†Said Gareth.
There are over 850,000 dementia sufferers in the UK and that figure is set to hit 1-million by 2025. Dementia suffers may have symptoms that may include memory loss, trouble with speech and difficulties with thinking and problem-solving. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or strokes. Dementia is progressive so symptoms only ever get worse. The Alzheimer’s Society is the leading UK care and research charity for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, their families and carers.
The ‘Steve Prescott St Helens 10k’ run takes place on the 6th March 2017 at Langtree Park in St Helens.
Gareth has set up a Just Giving page for anyone looking to sponsor him and the website can be found here:
