The 2 main reasons for a clean weld are Aesthetic and Technical. The aesthetic reason speaks for itself. When stainless steel is welded. The intense heat that is generated causes a chromium depletion, which leaves an iron rich zone around the weld. This results in the discolouration that you see below. This discoloured area corrodes easily because of the iron oxides that are present.
The TIG Brush has been designed to rapidly remove the discoloured oxides and passivate the underlying surface without altering the look of the finish metal. It does this by passing an electric current through a specially designed brush which is dipped into a cleaning solution and then applied to the areas needing cleaning.
The brush has been designed to convert the electric current into high temperatures, especially at the bristle ends. As the brush heats both the surface area and the cleaning fluid, the fluid breaks down the iron oxide layers that are very weak. Unlike traditionally used Pickling Paste, the active ingredients of the cleaning fluid is not dangerous to the operator and is non toxic to the environment.
Not only is the TIG Brush a safe and effective way to clean the surface of stainless steel after welding it’s been designed to quickly remove the discolouration of welds WITHOUT altering the surface appearance of the metal, so that once the TIG brush has been used, all you have to do is to wipe off the cleaning solution with a clean rag and some neutraliser.
When previously using the Pickling paste, further work was needed to finish the job as the acid in the pickling paste would leave a pale stain where the acid had been and, so further polishing would be required. The time saved using the TIG Brush compared to the pickling paste process means, that, within a few months the machine would have been paid for itself and that the work force and the environment are safer as well.
